Inea

Here's where you can find information about In-Game questions. If you want to know something about out-of-game things, check out the FAQ page above.

Inea is a fantasy world. That being said, it is not your typical fantasy world. Humans are pretty much the only sentient thing here, and their cultures have spread all over the place. Magic is a force here, but wizards aren't a common thing and most normal people avoid magic like the plague.

Below you'll find some information about various parts of Inea that you'll want to know about to play the game.

ANATHEMA

Magical Humans

How do you become an Anathema

You have to be born an anathema to become one. It's in your blood, though there hasn't been any sign yet that it passes from parent to child. At some point, usually around 10-14 anathema will begin to realize that magic does not affect them like it does everyone else. Instead of working randomly, it will activate in logical ways specifically to help the anathema.

As an example: a bunch of kids are bullying one boy who is not an anathema. They push him off a small footbridge and he lands in the stream. He starts to cry hysterically and shouts that he wishes the boys would die and suddenly the area around them is filled with a glittering smoke. Everyone, including the boy, goes home with a rash that itches something horribly. Magic reacted, but not in a way that would help the kid.

Lets say that the boy is anathema instead. When he shouts that he wishes the boys would die, instead of magical smoke the stream suddenly surges up and traps the boys in the water. They drown. Or, maybe lightning strikes directly onto them and they're zapped alive. Difference in this case: it activates based on the will of the anathema.

How does most of the world regard Anathema?

If you read the paragraph before, you can see why that would be utterly terrifying to most people, and that's generally how they react. The ability to control magic is incredibly powerful, and considering there's been at least one wizard who has pretty much conquered the world at this point, anathema are widely regarded as a problem to be snuffed out when they're young.

The majority of anathema don't make it to 16 because they're killed. Even some of the cultures who believe that anathema are sent from their god to protect the world aren't necessarily safe: if the anathema is regarded as a potential threat to someone's life or power they will be snuffed out.

The problem is that while they are very powerful, they aren't that strong to start with. It takes years of practice for anathema to understand how to actually exert real control over their magic, and young anathema will often struggle with accidental outbursts that can cause serious damage. Then of course, there are the Horrors. I'll get back to those later.

Is there an anathema ruled nation? Or a nation of just anathema?

Quick answer: no. Whether there has ever been one or not has pretty much been lost to history at this point. Most recently there's been a particular rush to try and take out anathema and avoid another Qedjix the Wizard.

Most of the time anathema don't live very long. Finding even a middle-aged anathema is like finding a unicorn (in our world, not in Inea). Besides the various nations trying to kill them, anathema are also hunted by horrors constantly, and the more anathema are in one place the more horrors show up and the stronger the horrors that show up will be. so staying in one place and building up a real system to grow is hard. Anathema need to keep running to survive.

Who exactly is Qedjix?

That is a great question. It's been about 300 years since Qedjix was around, and at this point most of what you'll hear about him is myths and legends. Some cultures think of him as some kind of trickster god, some think of him as an agent of pure evil. The only thing that does seem to stick is the fact that he was a wizard, one of the only Anathema to really master magic in history.

While most anathema will learn their own way to cast various spells the more that they learn magical control, Qedjix came up with ritual magic, and he's where all the rituals that you can find and cast come from. He practically ruled the world for several centuries, and some myths will even say he ruled as a tyrant though others will say he mostly ruled through removing problems to himself and left most people alone.

Of course, he disappeared about 300 years ago and no one knows exactly where he went. Most think he probably finally died - his life span was so unnaturally extended that he couldn't exist anymore. Some thing he might be hiding out for some reason. No one really has any idea what could have happened to someone so powerful, but you can be sure that most of them are determined to never let it happen again.

HORRORS

Monsters from another world

What's a Horror?

"Horror" is a blanket term for a type of dark creature. They're usually entirely made of shadow or ink, or at least look that way, and have an affinity for hunting down and slaughtering anathema. In fact, that's pretty much their entire purpose. Ever since anathema started showing up in the world, horrors have shown up with them. When an anathema matures into about 16-17 or so, horrors will start to show up nearby and try to hunt them down. They'll kill anything that gets in the way too, and killing a horror only means that more will come and stronger ones will come to finish the job.

This is one of the largest reasons that Anathema don't get to stay in the main cities for too long. As long as they keep moving, horrors are generally smaller and easier to deal with, but the longer they stay in an area the worse it will get.

What's the difference between Horrors, Monstrosities, and Abominations?

Horrors are the basic level, and also the general term for all three types. Most horrors are like people in that they have various skill types and abilities, but mostly they have the same general hit points and do the same damage as regular people.

Monstrosities are big. Like, really big. Think 20-50 feet tall and they hit like a truck. If you're facing a monstrosity you'll know because they have a white sash around them. This means that instead of hitting with the base 1 damage their base hit is 5. They hit like a truck.

Can you banish a horror?

Unfortunately... no. While horrors do technically come from another world, their nature means that they are effectively magically linked to an anathema. When that anathema dies, however, they disappear instantly.

MAGIC

A kind of important part of the world.

What's the difference between "Arcane Magic" and "Natural Magic"?

Arcane magic is the type that just sort of swirls around the world, reacting to the emotions of the people around it. It's where most anathema magic comes from. Their ability with magic comes from that chaotic side of things.

Natural magic is more fixed. It occurs naturally in magical creatures and beasts that roam the world, and has a fixed ability that happens every time. You can think of it as the more orderly magic: it does one specific thing and that thing only.

How do "spells" (Magical Skills) work?

Magical spells, or Magical Skills in the rulebook, are created by the specific anathema that uses them. Basically, in learning to control your magic, you took time to try to repeat actions that you took before. In general, an incantation of some kind helps you to get the magic to do exactly what you want, rather than just accomplish the task you want it to do in any way, so incanting became part of the way you cast spells. Moving arms in a specific way would also come into play there, or focusing on an item to cast through.

For the most part, this is just a ritual that each anathema has to come up with in order to make the spells more focused to do exactly what they need them to do. There's a lot of versatility in the exact flavor of the spell's effect.

Can regular people use magic?

Not if you define "using" magic as "having magic do what you want all the time in the same way as all the other times". Magic is still effected by the people it's around, but they have very little control over it other than to keep their emotions down. Emotional outbursts cause magic to react: having a breakdown, crying hysterically, throwing things or screaming... anything that shows a very severe emotion will set magic off and it can do a lot of things.

A lot of cultures have developed ways to deal with this, whether it is suppressing their emotions always, or maybe suppressing them until you get to a specific place. Some cultures encourage expression to see what the magic will do around you. It depends on where you're from.

Technology

The stuff that makes things work

What level of technology is in the world?

The world is still fairly primitive all around, though some places are definitely lower tech than others. At most I would say early renaissance is where technology would be.

Why doesn't technology keep advancing?

Easy. It blows up.

Not necessarily with fire. It might suddenly freeze over. Or just shatter for no reason. Or a hippo might appear in the middle of it.

Something the people of Inea have discovered over time is that the more tech is autonomous, the more likely it will explode. Even fairly simple things are likely to blow up if emotions are put into the mix as well. Magic is still pretty chaotic, so sometimes things can get away with being a bit more all over the place, but for the most part the focus of their tech is being man-manipulated.

Can I bring in new tech to Inea?

Most likely not. Sorry, but I don't want you to get your hopes up. If you do have an idea though that you think would be fine, or maybe a way to work around the magic blowing things up problem, reach out to staff at worldofinea@gmail.com. We'll be glad to work with you and see if you can't put a new unique thing into the world.
